Structural work complete at Portway Lifestyle Centre

Structural work is complete at the Portway Lifestyle Centre in Oldbury.

Contractor Thomas Vale and its subcontractors are now finishing block and brick work and installing mechanical and electrical services inside the building.

The lifestyle centre will have a full-sized pitch, outdoor exercise trail, sports hall, hydrotherapy pool, multipurpose area, gym, dance studio, sensory room, climbing wall and café.

At a ceremony on site, Sandwell Council's deputy leader and cabinet member for strategic resources Councillor Steve Eling said: “This is an exciting moment for the borough as we pass another major milestone on the way to the Portway Lifestyle Centre’s first day of opening.

“It is a key part of the massive regeneration programme which has taken place in the borough in recent years and shows we can deliver even in tough economic times.”

SLT Chief Executive, Paul Slater, said: "SLT is delighted to be a key partner in this exciting project and looks forward to managing this all-inclusive facility.

"SLT will be offering an extensive programme of physical activity and sport for all the people of Sandwell."

A centre of excellence for abled-bodied and disabled people, the lifestyle centre is a partnership between the council, operator Sandwell Leisure Trust, Sandwell Primary Care Trust and Sandwell Liftco.

Sport England has awarded £1.5m from its Olympic legacy programme, Iconic Facilities.

The Tividale Family Practice will move into the centre and become the Portway Family Practice.
