Move a Mile Graduation

SLT were celebrating this week with the completion of the latest
‘Move a Mile’ programme held at Tipton Sports Academy.
‘Move a Mile’ is an 8-week running programme aimed at beginners
and is funded by Sport England & Sandwell MBC’s Public Health team. This
latest programme attracted 37 adult and 7 junior participants.
The programme is perfect if you've never run before or those who
want to get back into being more active. The friendly coaching team of Donna Dobbin
& Steve Harding encouraged and supported participants through the programme
which kept the participants motivated and coming back each week, despite some
horrific winter weather.
Steve Harding commented, “The Move a Mile programme works because
it starts with a mix of running and walking, to gradually build up fitness and
stamina”
“The participants start by running for just 30 seconds at a time, allowing us to create realistic expectations and ensure the challenge is achievable right from the start. By week eight, participants graduate by completing a full mile around the athletics track”
50% of those who registered for week one successfully graduated
which is 25% above the national average for similar courses.
There are plenty of benefits from getting into running. For
starters, it's an easy way of improving your physical health. Running regularly
will improve the health of your heart and lungs. It can also help you lose
weight, especially if combined with a healthy diet.
Taking on the challenge of Move a Mile can help boost your confidence and self-belief, as you prove that you can set yourself a target and achieve a goal. Running regularly can also be a great stress reliever and has even been shown to combat depression.
The next running programme will be launched this Spring. Watch
