Meet The Member - Sue

One of our members, Sue, lives in New Zealand. She always visits UK at least once a year, and each time she does – she takes out a One card membership. Here’s why she comes back to SLT every year.

Sue’s Story:

"I’ve always been passionate about staying fit and have explored countless activities over the years. For me, the gym has been the most effective workout environment. Born in the 1940s, my life was naturally more active, and as I grew older, my love for physical activity only grew stronger. I was driven to understand how our incredible bodies function.

After leaving the UK with degrees in Anatomy and Natural Science, I discovered that these disciplines deeply influenced how I approach fitness. The Les Mills classes resonated with me most. I carefully selected the ones that I enjoyed and could teach effectively. Even now, in retirement, I still find joy in these workouts.

When I moved to New Zealand, I was struck by how fitness was seamlessly integrated into daily life. I remember arriving and seeing people running along the waterfront every morning, groups of cyclists hitting the roads at 5 a.m., and the impressive gyms. This exposure fuelled my passion for training others, and during my visits back to the UK, I made it a point to explore gyms, offer advice, and provide feedback on their classes.

Walking into Portway for the first time felt like stepping into a welcoming space. The friendly reception staff, well-equipped gym, and enthusiastic instructors made a lasting impression. Despite not being needed after my initial few weeks, I decided to sign up and have continued to be a part of the Portway community ever since. It feels like my extended family in the UK, and I truly appreciate how you all look after the community so well.

From my years of gym experience, I’ve learned that having good instructors who make workouts enjoyable is crucial, but personal effort is equally important. You don’t need to spend hours exercising; short, intense workouts can be highly effective. As we age, incorporating yoga and Pilates can greatly improve balance and mobility. It’s beneficial to challenge yourself with different classes, increase weights gradually to build strength, and even try dancing—even if you think you have two left feet! A smile during your workout is a great bonus.

Remember, your workout is about you. If you’re new to the gym, focus on proper posture, comfortable workout gear, and supportive gym shoes. For seasoned gym-goers, consider having someone review your routine to ensure you’re optimizing your efforts and preventing injuries.

Fitness is a personal choice, and by being here, you’ve chosen to prioritise your well-being. Embrace variety in your workouts, celebrate your progress, and always remember to enjoy the process. While I might not kick as high or run as fast as I once did, the camaraderie and encouragement at Portway make every visit a pleasure.

See you on the mat!"
