British Open Seniors Indoor Championships take place at Tipton Sports Academy
Tipton Sports Academy became the home of the British Open Seniors Indoor Championships 2019 from January 18th – January 27th. The ITF Grade 1 event was for the 35-85+ age groups and there were 433 entries this year. 21 singles and 15 doubles events took place with 42 matches being played per day.
Paul French won the Men’s 60 Singles title for the 5th year in a row, an impressive record for the championships. His second win came from the Men’s 60 Doubles in which he teamed up with Jeremy Trafford to win for the third time.
Henk Nijeboer also retained his title for the Men’s 75 Singles for the fourth year in a row. Pauline Fisher however was unable to retain her title and Shirley Freeman won the Women’s 65 Singles title. Teresa Catlin won the Women’s 45 Singles last year and took home two titles this year. Having moved up she won the Women’s 50+ title and teamed up with Anne Meredith to take the doubles title. Local player Gordon Oates and Tom Baron were defeated by Michael Cottee and Peter Ellison in the Men’s 85 doubles event.
The championships were a great success and the team at Tipton Sports Academy did a great job at accommodating the event. For more information on the championships visit the Seniors Tennis GB Facebook page, full results are available at Seniors' Competitions page.
