Badminton: the health benefits of this all-rounder sport

Badminton is a great racquet sport with an amazing amount of benefits. An all-weather indoor sport there’s no excuse not to try out a game or two! Here are a few reasons to pick up the racquet;

Improves physical fitness – With the amount of running, ball-hitting and jumping it’s no surprise that it improves your cardiovascular health which in turn will lead to reduced risk of health problems such as obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Burns calories – One session can burn up to 450 calories which is a great benefit if you’re looking to lose weight.

Improves concentration and reflexes – The fast pace of the game and focusing on hitting the shuttlecock and returning it keeps you mentally agile.

Stress buster – Badminton releases endorphins which are neuro-transmitters that have been found to improve mood and sleep.

Improves muscle strength and flexibility – In a game you’re constantly moving your legs and arms with all the running, reaching and swinging. This will increase flexibility, tone and strength in many muscles across the body.

Good for mobility– As such an active sport it’s a great way to keep your joints lubricated which prevents arthritis and improves mobility.

Badminton is available at Portway Lifestyle Centre, Haden Hill Leisure Centre, Wednesbury Leisure Centre, Tipton Sports Academy and Hadley Stadium. To view times and days visit our timetables page, for more information contact the centre you wish to attend.
