Parent FAQs
How does the Diving programme work?
When signing on to the Diving programme you will follow the Swim England Learn to Dive syllabus learning new skills from various boards. The coaches will constantly be assessing your ability and will move you up the grading system when they are confident in your ability. The programme ranges from Level 1 – Level 7.
What are the Swim England Diving awards 1-7?
The Swim England Diving Awards provide seven levels of progressive diving skills, from complete beginner through to club level. They are perfect for those new to the sport or with experience gained from Learn to Swim Stages 9-10 Diving.
They have been developed in consultation with British Diving, diving clubs, diving experts and coaches, and will help your child learn the skills and techniques of the sport. They will learn the techniques for jumps, falls and dives from both poolside and diving boards.
Kit Bag Suggestions:
- Swimwear
- Towel
- Drink in a plastic drinks bottle
- Shampoo/Shower gel
- Hair clips/hair bands
How long will it take my child to pass each Award?
Every child learns new skills at different rates, so it will depend on their skills, experience and consistency in performing the skills. A coach will continually assess and will want to see the expected standard more than just once.
If your child has more swimming experience or a background in dance, gymnastics or trampolining, then they may move more quickly through the awards, due to their increased confidence in the water and transferrable skills.
What is important is that they are supported, have lots of fun and progress at a speed suitable for them which allows them to reach their full potential.
What experience do I need to start diving?
No experience is needed to start diving. Just the ability to swim 25m confidently within deep water of over 3 metres.
Will you need goggles?
No, they can’t be worn during classes
Do I need to be a member of Sandwell Leisure Trust or Sandwell Aquatic Centre in order to join the diving programme?
No, you do not need to be a member of the centre to join the diving programme. You need to fill out an enquiry or just book yourself in to the programme on the diving page and this will set you up to get started.
Can a child with disabilities take part in the Diving Awards?
Swim England provides resources and training to help teachers and coaches deliver lessons that cater for a wide range of needs.
We would always encourage children with a disability to take part if possible. We would recommend an initial discussion with our Head Coach to see how the lessons can be adapted and your child supported.
Do we get to use the Dry Training area?
When on the diving programme you won’t be using the Dry Training area unless you are within a competitive squad. However we will be running holiday sessions which allow customers to use these facilities and enjoy technical skills on trampolines and springboards including the awesome foam pit!
When I arrive at the centre what do I do?
When you enter Sandwell Aquatic Centre you will need to see reception to get yourself booked in before making your way to the changing village. When you are dressed ready to dive, make your way out on to poolside towards the diving pit. You will need to wait by the tiled benches where the coaches will meet you ready for your session.
Where do the parents/guardians go while the lesson is waiting?
When the lesson is running, parents/guardians cannot be on poolside so you will need to make your way up to the spectator’s gallery on the far side of the pool. You can sit there and watch the diving programme however under no circumstances videos or photography can be taken during the lessons.
Can adults join in the diving programme?
Absolutely! We offer adult only sessions which will allow you to bring out your dare devil side and test your confidence levels.
