Norma Hyde - Chair of Special Olympics Sandwell - June 2014

Portway Lifestyle Centre

'After 12 weeks the Young Athletes Programme finished with a celebration event, held on the morning of Saturday 7th June 2014 at Portway Lifestyle Centre, Oldbury. Following the opening ceremony, the children enjoyed their sporting activities in the spirit of the YAP.
The children were all presented with a Special Olympics young athlete medal at the closing ceremony and seemed delighted with their special shiny medal. Refreshments followed; with cold drinks, fresh fruit, snacks & party rings. Afterwards the families made good use of the Portway’s sensory room.
There were 5 families represented, 5 young athletes along with their 3 brothers. All in all, 8 young children took part in the celebration activities with the help of 8 family members. Plus of course the Special Olympics volunteers and coaches.
All the children tried hard at the activities especially the assault course and really seemed to like the new addition of a great big Tunnel. They finished with parachute games and then the closing ceremony, including the song "Living Our Dream" which was the official anthem of the 2013 Special Olympics.
Thanks to Sandwell Leisure Trust and Portway Lifestyle Centre, who have been most helpful in organising this new venture.'
