Oldbury Leisure Centre is now closed ahead of an £18m redevelopment...
Oldbury Leisure Centre will be replaced by the Portway Lifestyle Centre by 2013.
The centre closed to customers on Sunday 30th October 2011.
The Portway Lifestyle Centre in Newbury Lane will be a new type of leisure centre, with sport and leisure facilities alongside social care and health services, including a GP surgery.
One of the first places of its kind in the country, it will be a centre of excellence with a particular focus on disabled people.
Facilities will include:
Four court sports hall,
Hydrotherapy pool - this is a small pool used for therapeutic purposes,
Café,
Sensory and therapy garden,
Climbing wall,
Dance studio,
Fitness gym,
Fulll-size artificial grass pitch for senior, junior and 5-a-side football,
and a GP surgery.
Sandwell Council's cabinet member for leisure services Cllr Linda Horton said: "Oldbury Leisure Centre has served the community well but it is at the end of its useful life.
"Portway will be a superb replacement, serving everyone and particularly disabled people.
"We have legal and financial agreements to complete and then demolition work will start in earnest."
The Council and Sandwell Leisure Trust, which will run the centre, are working on the scheme with Sandwell Primary Care Trust and Sandwell Local Improvement Trust (LIFTCo).
